In 2021, Precision Outreach was hired to create what would be, by far, the largest single-issue school choice organization in Texas. We built an enormous operation from scratch, from the grassroots outreach, to connections in every part of the state, to a content-generation engine that produced everything from videos, to printed materials, and web assets. That organization, Liberty for the Kids, proved an exceptionally important piece of the puzzle towards getting school choice passed in Texas – and while the fight continues, the groundwork is laid in a more solid way than ever before.
Taking on an incumbent is never an easy task, especially when your opponent (a) is extremely well funded and (b) has one of the biggest political consulting firms in Texas. We ran a lean, data-driven campaign for Josh Tetens’ run for District Attorney in McLennan County, with 260,000-plus residents. After he was viciously attacked by the incumbent for being a criminal defense attorney, we created a series of devastatingly effective ads that turned the tide, most especially one featuring his kids tickling him and saying they’re the only ones allowed to attack their dad – about which many locals said it was “the best campaign ad [they’d] ever seen.”
Confronted with a solid brick wall in state statute that dictated that the property rights of rural residents were arbitrarily decided by the whims of cities, then-councilman Jess Fields (now President of Precision Outreach) knew that true reform would have to come from the state level. When a small area outside College Station was annexed against the will of its residents, Jess was spurred to go and begin advocating for reform at a statewide level. Joining a major think tank in Austin, he ginned up support from around the state, took on one of the largest public-sector associations representing cities, and created the first draft for what became the Texas Annexation Act of 2017. It seemed as if the idea came out of nowhere – until you realized that it had been a slow, purposeful fight that emerged after several years of grassroots progress.
When you’re working towards a goal, keeping your purpose in mind is essential. One thing that frustrates us is that too much of the marketing world is just “calling it in” and checking the boxes. Yes, it’s really important to do things like Search Engine Optimization, and we do a fine job of it. And yes, content marketing can also be successful – as we’ve shown time and time again.
Before any marketing strategy can be successful, however, it must exist in the first place. In other words – it’s really crucial to do the hard work of planning your work up front, and then you can work your plan. With every client we work with – even the smallest accounts – we start with asking “what’s the goal?” We want to build a plan around whatever it is – that’s the only way to assure success for our clients.
