When I started Precision Outreach, the focus was creating great content and growing customer engagement. That continues to be important, and we continue to provide those services.
But as an experienced communications expert, strategy, research, and thought leadership started to become a bigger and bigger piece of the puzzle. In fact, clients were telling me that this consulting with them was more valuable than our marketing services. I saw it first hand, as our insights led to millions of dollars of new revenue for our clients.
Still, though… Consulting?
After all, consulting services have usually the province of Fortune 500 companies, who get huge left-wing firms on the coasts to write multi-million-dollar reports on how they can improve their business. Many small-to-medium-size business owners have never, and would never, think to hire a consultant. I used to be among them.
Then I realized how needed this service was. Faith-based, pro-America businesses need strategy advice as much as anyone else. They need the outsider’s perspective. And as I looked back, I realized how much I had always looked for it, myself.
Yes, I’ve always benefited from the value of consulting and information. And I’ve usually paid a lot for it. Similarly, Precision Outreach spends tens of thousands of dollars a year on extremely expensive software, data, and insight products to glean insights about everything from search engine traffic to consumer data.
It became clear that we needed to create a service that specifically gave clients the valuable “outsider’s perspective” that huge corporations benefit from, without all of the cost. So we created StrategySync.
I remember one of our first clients, in home services. This guy expected me to come in and know absolutely nothing about business, which was apparently what he had experienced with other “marketing” firms. (You’d think that marketers would know about business but…. I digress)
We were talking about his content strategy and I suggested that some of his product positioning might have been a little off. Then, I told him some things I’d noticed about how his salespeople could be more efficient in how they supervised projects.
After he did a little thinking, he realized that I had just saved him a heck of a lot of money.
“Aren’t you just a marketing firm?” he said. At that point, I hadn’t given it much thought. But I’m glad that I responded this way: “We’re more than that.”
And it’s the truth. We’ve never been a digital-only marketing firm, because they have no clue about business. They might be good at running PPC (Pay-Per-Click) or Facebook ad campaigns, they might understand how to do basic SEO, they might be good at email marketing. But the vast majority of marketers have no clue about business strategy.
Along the way, I’ve been clear that Precision Outreach isn’t just a marketing firm, we’re a strategy firm. Folks may think that’s all fluff, until they talk to me and realize I’m serious.
