10 reasons to hire a B2B marketer

by Precision Outreach – July 11, 2023

The environment we’re in is tougher than ever for marketers, and the businesses that want to break throught he noise and get noticed. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the business to business, or B2B space. It’s a specialized thing – not everyone understands the needs of businesses.

However, businesses who have found good B2B marketers are well rewarded, and recognize the benefit of significant improvements in their overall strategy, higher conversion rates, and increased revenues due to hiring one. Let’s go through 10 reasons why you might consider hiring one…

1. B2B marketers have specialized knowledge

B2B marketers specialize in understanding the subtle nuances of selling to other businesses. It is quite different than selling to consumers – with businesses, you’re working directly with decision makers whose set of incentives are drastically different than your average consumer.

Put another way – B2B marketers understand not just the “what” but the “why” and that’s crucial. By employing their experience to tailor campaigns specifically tailored for businesses, their specialized knowledge helps ensure more successful and targeted marketing initiatives.

2. Customer relationship building

The best B2B marketers possess an uncanny talent for building and nurturing relationships with existing and attracting new clients alike. They get into your business and figure out not just what you do, but what your customers. Here’s why that matters: you cannot possibly understand your target market unless you understand who you’re selling to, right?

By researching, and possibly even communicating with some key decision-makers within target companies, good B2B marketers understand how to reach these customers – and might even make a few sales along the way!

3. Big-picture strategic input and advice

When hiring a B2B marketer, you get more than just service provision: they offer invaluable strategic input that helps align marketing plans with overall business goals. That strategic consulting, if done right, can add enormous value to your organization – this goes way beyond making a few social media posts!

When we work with clients who sell to other businesses, for example, we are looking not just at putting out content or advertising – we’re working to help their entire business integrate with the marketing plan. Sounds big and difficult and grand, but it’s really not – it’s just a matter of taking the time to work with the business and consult through the challenge of building a new marketing plan.

4. Predict the future before it wipes you out

Good B2B marketers understand your target customer, of course, but it’s also important – really important – to understand what the platform usage trends are upstream that may affect your business in the near future. In other words… what are kids using these days?

It’s a good habit to try and look out for what the next hot social media platform or similar is among young people (under 25), not because it will immediately affect B2B sales (though it could) but because what they use ultimately filters through the market… and possibly, even in the early adopter stages, can filter “up” to parents and bosses who pay attention to what’s going on. You don’t have to predict the future, you just have to recognize it. A good B2B marketer is always trying to stay a few steps ahead.

5. Save money and liability

Contracting a service out is fantastic in part because you can so easily fire it if the job’s not done right. Sadly that cannot be said for in-house personnel. Hiring a B2B marketer on contract is like putting Jim Collins’ “bullets then cannonballs” approach into practice: do your best to find out what works, spend a little money seeing if it does by hiring a contractor, and then if it works well, you can go “all in” and fire the big cannonball.

It’s also usually cheaper to hire out – we’ve seen folks paying $100,000 or more for someone with a year or two of experience (if even that) and let’s be honest, that person has limited understanding of your business, your business clients and customers, and the marketplace as a whole.

6. Potentially increase revenues by hiring a B2B marketer

This is way down at number 6 because let’s be honest: it’s kind of obvious. Everyone wants to market their business not just for giggles, but to actually increase revenue. A good B2B marketer with a plan can contribute mightily to that goal, and often much faster than business owners realize.

Good SEO strategy that can increase revenue directly by sourcing new leads can take as little as a few months, depending on the keywords (to name but one example). Who doesn’t want more revenue?

7. Work with partners and stakeholders as needed

Good B2B marketers can work with partner agencies, in-house employees, in-house marketing teams, CMOs, etc. You don’t hire a B2B marketer to necessarily do everything, but a good firm usually can.

Still, especially in a much larger business, the B2B marketer should (and will) respect the existing food chain and make sure that other players are respected as they develop the plans for new marketing opportunities.

B2B does not mean "boring marketing."

8. B2B marketers understand how to use data

B2B marketers understand the power of using numbers as part of their approach to marketing, turning numbers into insight-rich results that guide business strategy. It’s likely, too, that your business has more numbers than you realize

This is why a trained B2B marketing eye can find the valuable needles in your haystack (or spreadsheet!) to guide your strategy going forward.

9. Adapt to changing markets (that's putting it mildly)

Has the economy been nuts or what? Newsflash: it always is. With business environments constantly shifting and demanding adjustments in marketing strategies, B2B marketers possess the skill set needed to quickly adjust to these changes and keep your company on its intended course.

With economic uncertainty continuing into the foreseeable future (let’s just be honest, it’ll always be around), it’s a good idea to keep that flexibility and versatility on tap for when you need it most.

10. De-stress the team and yourself, too

If you’re doing everything else, marketing is the last thing you need to cram in. It’s stressful to say the least – not only are you working constantly on building the rest of the business, but you start worrying about how this tweet or that photo will reflect you to your valuable existing customers, not to mention new ones…

A good B2B marketer takes the stress away by just doing the job, and you get the reports, input, etc, but you don’t have to be poring over these aspects of your business constantly. And less stress is nice.

Big picture

Overall, hiring a B2B marketer offers numerous advantages to any company operating within this crazy economic, competitive, and marketing millieu. It’s a good idea to consider contracting, too – get the fresh perspective of an outside source who has been there and done that.

Not only that, you might be fortunate to find someone or a firm who can forge strategic new business relationships – aka, do some selling in the process of building out your marketing plan – and learn how to galvanize new customer relationships in the process.

It’s possible to markedly reduce your costs and liability with B2B marketers, and get their advanced experience and skillset in a way that doesn’t “bet the farm” or obligate you to a complex, drawn-out hiring process.

Honestly, it just makes sense if you’re selling to other businesses to have someone handle your marketing.
